OAU Students' Protesters Trend The Internet With #ReOpenOAU
Discontent Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, responded to a Call by the Association of Campus Journalist, OAU Chapter, for students to ask for a resumption of Academic activities and take to social media to make their positions felt by creating an Online campaign.
The ACJ statement,in part, reads , “We have sampled
Students opinion and we know Students want to
“We are dedicated to being the masses voice objectively
and to this end will not shy away from our duties.
“Governing Council has not been constituted at the
moment and with feelers we are getting, if students
don’t speak out, delay may make the close shut for
“With the current pace of events, if Students do not
voice out, the break still has long days ahead.
“Join us on Twitter and Facebook as we take over the
Social media with #ReopenOAU.”
The statement implored all OAU students to join the
campaign and share their unpleasant experiences of the last 3 months spent at home.
It can be recalled that following a two and half months hiatus, students of the Federal institution were set to resume, before the Federal Government bent to the pleas of the Senior Staff Association
of Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff
Union (NASU) and dissolved the University's Governing Council, suspending the resumption indefinitely. Recent developments have suggested that neither amicable solution nor settlement from a legal institution were in sight, further denting hopes of a return to academic activities in the short term.
Some of the reactions by students on social platform Twitter :-
